This book was a gift from a friend of mines for my birthday. I really enjoyed the entire read!The book is set in a style of vignettes through the main character, Harrison. It deals with lots of plots that Harrison is set in. Brantingham does a great job in keeping the reader's attention focused throughout the entire collection of vignettes.
The main plot derives from Harrison trying to help his son, Stanley, through phases he is experiencing. Brantingham makes Harrison a loveable and great person and father for Stanley.
I hope to read more from this author. A great read for someone who is looking for something "different"!

John Brantingham is a master of the short story form. I've read his novels and poetry, they're all well written pieces of work. Basically, the man can write extremely well. Then I had the opportunity to read his short story collection. I was floored. So interesting and they captivate your spirit. I can't wait for more of his work!!!

Let Us All Pray Now To Our Own Strange Gods starts out with one of my favorite scenes I've ever read, and it unfolds into a very personal narrative about divorce and the unsung casualties it produces. Harrison is likeable but flawed as he struggles to deal with divorce, a troubled son whose therapy doesn't seem to take no matter what they try, and his own baggage that he carries into new relationships. Brantingham is a master storyteller, and he weaves a tale that is as unpredictable as it is revealing, until the striking ending locks everything into place. Pick up this book!
In John Brantingham's latest short story collection, we get to know all the sides of Harrison, a new divorcé. This collection of short stories and their connective tissue is well put together, and floats between the things that happen in Harrison's life, the things that have happened, and the things he wishes would happen. Altogether, this is a book that evokes sympathy, empathy, and the sure notion that we all know someone who's deserving of more care than we might think we can afford to give.
This is a fine, full picture of one man and his struggles.
"Let Us all Pray Now to our Own Strange Gods" tells the adventures Harrison has through his divorce. The story starts off with introducing the main character seeing his son performing a crucifix on his favorite stuffed animal.
The entire book tells short stories of Harrison's misfortunes such as giving his son "the big talk", Harrison struggling with his divorce of his spiteful wife, and Harrison struggling to find peace within himself.
John Brantingham takes us in the mind of this loveable protagonist who just wants his son to be alright and does it in such an amazing way that makes his audience root for Harrison even when he wants to blackmail his wife.
This story will keep you reading till the very last page. The ending is so magical it brings someone back to life.
Anyone who has struggled to find peace within themselves or try to cope with the struggles of the outside will love this book, as I do.
Brantingham makes storytelling look easy. Heartbreak. Baby mama drama. Fatherhood. DUI's. Manipulation. Love. Emotional blackmail. Single parenting. Sex in the woods. All told in a simple way.
This collection of short stories combines to form a narrative about Harrison, a recent divorcee, and his struggles with his ex-wife, and with raising his son. Harrison is a fantastic character, whose flaws make him relatable and human. His choices are often the opposite of what one would expect, but upon further reflection, turn out to be exactly what is right for the character. I cannot recommend this book enough.
